Title: E-Learning Writer/Instructional Designer

This position will be responsible for supporting a multi-year training development cooperative agreement to produce online training modules and other content, and will support writing/editing needs of HealthHIV’s online education programs. The writer/editor will develop educational content that is clear and engaging to aid learning transfer. They will use effective techniques to produce content fast, tailor writing to the appropriate modality, format, and audience, and to clarify and simplify messages.

The writer/editor will have proven writing skills, adhere to timelines, and manage multiple projects in various stages of development. The writer/editor will collaborate with the instructional design team and subject matter experts to produce clear, concise training products that are appropriate for the HIV prevention public health workforce and meet 508 compliance standards. They will know how to use tone, point of view, and personality to keep various audiences actively engaged.


BA or BS in English or a related field with preferred work experience in medical education, public health or HIV prevention education. Masters preferred. Minimum of five years related work experience combined with the ability to demonstrate the necessary skills and abilities for this position. The candidate must present two recent writing samples that illustrate his/her ability to meet the job requirements. Strong preference for healthcare or medical writer experience.

This full-time position is based at HealthHIV’s Washington, DC office; however remote applicants are encouraged to apply.

  • Possess competencies in harm reduction strategies, HIV prevention and care, viral hepatitis, STIs, and aging with HIV and other comorbid conditions.

Key Functions:

  • Write/edit training content with a team including subject matter experts, instructional designers, and other content writers.
  • Collaborate with a team to ensure written content is appropriate to the audience and adheres to 508 compliant standards.
  • Draft storyboards from narrative content, applying concepts developed by the training team.
  • Prepare well-written manuals, job aids, and supplemental materials for E-learning courses that reduce cognitive load, positively influence learning transference, and serve as on-the-job resources.
  • Draft scripts for video products.
  • Test online training to ensure functionality.
  • Provide feedback on design, graphics, and training components as they are being designed.
  • Use principles of adult learning to improve instructional design.
  • Develop written reports and other materials to document delivery of quality services.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • Limited travel required, post COVID-19 restrictions.
