Title: Graphic Designer           

Reports to: Project Director

This position will be responsible for all graphic design related work to support HealthHIV’s HIV, viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV), sexually transmitted disease and infection (STD and STI) and LGBTQ+ health services programs and projects.

This position will provide graphic design support for agency wide projects, programs, grants, conferences, trainings and other activities. The Graphic Designer will combine art and technology to communicate messaging, campaigns, resources, etc. through images and the layout of websites and printed pages. The Graphic Designer will be expected to transform data into visual graphics and diagrams to make complex ideas more accessible. This position will create and design various materials for print and digital collateral, ensure projects are completed with high quality and on schedule, prioritize and manage multiple projects within design specifications and budget restrictions and work with a wide range of media and graphic design software. The Graphic Designer will collaborate with other staff and partners for guidance and feedback on project/grant specific deliverables and products.


Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in art, graphic design or a related field. Proven work experience may substitute for a degree. Also required: at least 3 years of related work experience combined with the ability to demonstrate the necessary skills and abilities for this position. Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography, print, and digital. Strong knowledge of multiple types of graphic design software.

This full-time position is based at HealthHIV’s Washington, DC office, and therefore preferred that the employee live in or be willing to relocate to Washington, DC, Maryland or Virginia.

Skills and Abilities Needed:

  • Mastery of graphic design software (Adobe Suite).
  • Deliver quality graphic design products.
  • Demonstrated compelling portfolio showing creative, design and software skills
  • Strong knowledge of design and visual principles.
  • Possess strong communication skills with the ability to communicate design choices clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee projects and meet or exceed deadlines.
  • Balance multiple responsibilities and function well under pressure.
  • Ability to receive and apply feedback and show flexibility with the creative process.
  • Work effectively independently as well as part of a team with diverse staff.
  • Strong attention to detail, detail oriented.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Be skilled in other computer software, especially in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Key Functions:

  • Create visual elements such as web pages, gifs, brochures, logos, advertisements, original images, and illustrations to help deliver a message.
  • Use digital illustration, photo editing software, and layout software to design visual concepts.
  • Design layouts, including selection of colors, images, and typefaces
  • Create or incorporate illustrations, pictures, and designs to reflect the desired theme and tone of the project and communications.
  • Translate project needs and branding strategies into design strategies.
  • Select colors, fonts, photographs, layouts and other design elements to communicate creative concepts.
  • Establish creative direction for the company as well as brand guidelines.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other partnering agencies, providers and stakeholders in implementing project deliverables.
  • Articulate and pitch design concepts to project leads and staff.
  • Actively seek ways to improve project graphics and visual components.
  • Maintain accurate records, including agreed upon schedules and deadlines, concept ideas, engagement notes, etc.
  • Effectively manage consultants and subcontractors by developing and monitoring contracts and scopes of work.
  • Develop written reports and other materials to document delivery of quality services.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
